Radon Mitigation Methods

Every home is different. The type of radon mitigation system we recommend depends on how your home was built, the foundation design, and where the radon is entering. At Regina Radon Solutions, we design every system to meet Canadian standards and achieve the greatest possible radon reduction.
 

Sub-Slab Depressurization (Most Common)

Sub-slab depressurization is the most effective and widely used radon mitigation method for homes with poured concrete basement floors.

A small suction pit is created beneath the concrete slab and connected to a PVC pipe and specialized radon fan. The fan continuously creates negative pressure beneath the foundation, preventing radon gas from entering the home. Instead, the gas is safely vented above the roofline where it quickly disperses into the outdoor air.

This system is quiet, energy efficient, and operates 24 hours a day with very little maintenance. In most homes, sub-slab depressurization reduces radon levels by 80–99%, often bringing concentrations well below the Canadian guideline of 200 Bq/m³.

Best for:

  • Poured concrete basement floors

  • Finished and unfinished basements

  • Most homes in Regina and Southern Saskatchewan

Sump Pit Depressurization

Many homes have a sump pit that provides direct access beneath the basement floor. Rather than creating a new suction point, the existing sump can often be incorporated into the radon mitigation system.

A sealed, airtight sump lid is installed and connected to the radon piping. The fan draws radon gas from beneath the foundation through the sump pit before it can enter the living space. The sump pump continues to function normally while the system actively reduces radon levels.

This approach is often less invasive and can provide excellent pressure field extension beneath the slab.

Best for:

  • Homes with an existing sump pit

  • Homes where the sump has direct access to the gravel beneath the slab

  • Situations where a new suction point may not be necessary

Sub-Membrane Depressurization (Crawl Spaces)

Homes with dirt or gravel crawl spaces require a different approach because radon can easily pass through exposed soil.

A heavy-duty polyethylene membrane is installed over the crawl space floor and sealed to the foundation walls, support columns, and penetrations. A radon fan then creates suction beneath the membrane, collecting radon gas before it enters the home and safely venting it outdoors.

This system not only reduces radon but can also help decrease moisture and soil gases entering the crawl space.

Best for:

  • Dirt crawl spaces

  • Gravel crawl spaces

  • Homes with exposed soil beneath the structure
